Highlights: FALL 2018 NY Global Conference

(November 15-16, 2018)

After hosting 50 Family Office Roundtables in 35 cities and 15 countries in 2018, we held our inaugural Global Conference in New York on Nov. 15-16. Despite a snowstorm and losing 48 people, we still had over 170 gathered over the two days. This included…

  • 92 principals or close advisors to a Single Family Office (SFO),

  • 24 with a Multi-Family Office (MFO)

  • 23 associated with a fund

  • 13 associated with 360 One Firm

  • 12 HNW

Day 1 (Roundtables)

Participants moved around four roundtables by asset and industry. All introduced themselves and shared their “ASKs” as to seeking investments and/or capital.

  • Asset Classes: Early VC, Late VC, PE, Credit, Public Markets and Opp. Zones

  • Industries: Industrials, Consumer, TMT, Ag, Cannabis, RE, Financials, Healthcare, Impact

Day 2 (Panels)

Panelists noted what scares and excites them.

Opening Panel highlights:

  • PE perspectives on over-heating economy, preparing for the coming recession

  • Global risk of “irrational belligerence” with the US less active as an anchor for stability

  • Tax challenges for Family Offices to optimize tax treatment of expenses

  • Drastic change for managing Family Offices and what Next Gen is teaching elders

  • Private markets are becoming more influential, which is good and bad

  • Opportunities to apply technology to make an impact, including in emerging markets

PE Panelists embraced co-investment.

VC Panelists focused on niches and debated valuation adjustments.

Credit Panelists saw signs of overheating but focused on discipline and niches.

Next Generation Panelists noted ways to encourage entrepreneurism, while mindful of nurturing family dynamics.

Opportunity Zone Panelists explained the legal/accounting basics of the new tax law, and FOs (and newly forming funds) explained how they take advantage of it with various examples.
