“ INTRODUCTION: I'm full-time executive founder of Wellville, a 10-year, 5-community nonprofit project dedicated to showing the value of thinking long-term to foster equity and health (not healthCARE). We're focused not on handing out fish or tech miracles, nor even on teaching people how to fish, but coaching them to build their own sustainable fishing schools. My background is journalism (transparency), Wall Street (data and ROI!), high tech (efficiency and connectivity), and emerging markets (Russia, eastern Europe, India and Africa - reality and an ability to see the US from outside). Also, an angel investor in all of above and logistics. 1- REFLECTION: It's too early to tell. Any serious decision takes a while to have an effect. Best in a decade was $100K into Square VERY early. Sheer luck. My worst decisions have mostly been ignoring my own doubts about certain founders. 2 - PREDICTIONS: I think insurance is due for a transformation as AI/big data helps us not just predict risk but reduce it. They work with their customers to reduce risk and premiums, and share in the upside of reduced costs. This is happening in auto and healthcare; happened long ago with fire (and inspections to reduce fire risk. (I have investments in a number of companies focused here.) Next up: cybersecurity, environmental hazards and the like. Risk-sharing --> risk-reduction. Aside from that, obvious trends like more online everything, more attention to the long-term benefits of health/resilience, and, unfortunately, more need for mental health care in the wake of COVD-19 traumas. Logistics will matter a lot as living/working patterns change. 3 – GOAL : Get others to copy Wellville, and coach their own communities towards health, equity and resilience. Also, get voters to support more long-term investment into public health and education including child care. 4 - ASK: Our Wellville communities all need people interested in funding specific programs around maternal/infant care, child care, diabetes prevention, mental health support, opioid use reduction (which is not just stopping drugs, but finding a more fulfilling life). They are Clatsop County OR, Lake County CA, Muskegon County MI, North Hartford CT and Spartanburg SC. 5 – ADVICE: Understand how lucky you are when you succeed, and learn from your failures when you don't. (As an angel investor, I attribute my investment successes to luck, and I count the money I spend on "failures" as the cost of my continuing education.) ONE WORD : Next chapter!
