REFLECTING ON MLK

Each year I reflect on MLK, inspired by his vision, his resolve, his patience, and his love. Yesterday, I was exchanging messages with Chance Patterson of the King Center (formerly my roommate in Cleveland when we were both practicing law who later led communications for Oprah and who spoke in our Cannabis Social Equity event (see Highlights). MLK REFLECTIONS WITH CHANCE PATTERSON

Each year I reflect on MLK, inspired by his vision, his resolve, his patience, and his love. Yesterday, I was exchanging messages with Chance Patterson, who is with the King Center and formerly headed up communications for Oprah. Chance spoke in the Cannabis Social Equity event per above (again, see Highlights and full recording). Chance was also my roommate in Cleveland Heights and I am so proud of what he has done and is doing. I’ll summarize my exchange here.

Chance, I have some ideas to punctuate your MLK Linkedin post message. You could join this week's Tuesday Briefing to help us reflect on MLK. And we can re-confirm our goals for 361 as a community for Inclusion as it is all part of the 360 Roundtable to make sure we have everyone at the table to collaborate.

First, it’s clear that not only the scars of racism run deep but that racism rears its head covertly and surprisingly in overt ways. When my sister-in-law Robbie Brenner (Oscar nominee as producer of Dallas Buyers Club) told me in 2017 about a movie she wanted to finance about true story of the KKK in South Carolina in the mid-90s when Chance and I were roommates, I threw myself into making it come to screen. We had Forest Whitaker, Usher, and others. It should have done well but was released the week cinemas were shut down in March 2020 for Covid. The message is powerful to overcome struggle, for MLK-like love in the face of hate, and for redemption to those who change from hate. Here’s the trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTDXiVbwqxw

Back to what we can do. At our 4th Impact Summit we committed more to inclusion. Here's the video of last Spring's Summit: https://youtu.be/fet7-GerZCA. We have been intentional to do more events that include diverse perspectives and I would argue opportunities. We added a South Side Tour per below which showed amazing opportunities.

We built some stepping stones with our initiative to focus on the South Side of Chicago from a committee, a panel at our November conference (see below, see highlights here https://youtu.be/OW4l0UomAho) and we will host our 4th Chicago Conference on May 4-5. https://youtu.be/OW4l0UomAho.

While we will continue to increase diversity in events, we are also seeking to bring on mandates with top-tier funds (and selectively deals) led by women and people of color.

While we receive a lot of funds and deals in our funnel, I pledged to prioritize those which add diversity.

My main thesis is to focus on early stage VC funds led by more diverse managers and/or those focused on areas like the South Side to enhance the entrepreneurial ecosystems.

Ideally these funds have a track record with an initial fund or via SPVs so that investors can see the potential in high returns where early stage valuations may be lower and the founders have chips on their shoulders or extra fire and passion.

Having these funds in our ecosystem makes us more effective in helping founders seeking capital, as well as talent.

Before we formally do due diligence on a fund or deal to bring on a mandate to share with suitable investors, we enable you to “Onboard” deals so that we our banking team can review them as well as let the community provide “inbound” inquiries of interest to help us vet them.
