Here’s an excerpt from my LinkedIn article. “…we are excited for our Aug. 19 "Human Trafficking" philanthropy spotlight with a great panel assembled by Mitzi Perdue, who is involved in many programs and companies attacking this $150B industry. Human trafficking touches many of our other Global Groups including: Money laundering (a key focus area for Mitzi and this panel) Cybersecurity (as Hamlet Yousef has showcased, relating to money laundering, and an area that Mitzi will explain where some women caught up in trafficking have broken the cycle by becoming "White Hat Hackers" to expose the underground systems) Foster care (a focus of Rob Horwitz's foundation, which has seen a reduction of foster children in New York from 60K to 16K while it has proliferated in other states - and can be a factor in trafficking) Pharmacies. Pharmacies often are tipped off to trafficking rings, which I learned from a University of Michigan cross-disciplinary course that led to such findings and leveraging that for new solutions. Parts of Pharma can also be part of the problem too. Education. At our Education Spotlight on July 6, 2020 we saw solutions with charter schools giving students, some juvenile delinquents, not only diplomas but well-paying jobs. It's also an area where some families own businesses with apprentice programs with similar solutions. Education for Prisoners (a panel subject in Ohio on Sept. 27-28 led by Eric Lindberg of his Knowlton Foundation, supporting programs for colleges to provide courses and degree programs for prisoners).
As such, Human Trafficking deserves much more than a one-hour spotlight but a series of events and a full Summit, which is what we will do similar to our 3rd Annual Impact Summit. |
